What does the Ohio Treasurer do?

The state treasurer serves as the chief financial officer of the state and acts as the state’s banker. They are tasked with collecting and safeguarding taxes and fees. They must oversee the state’s investment portfolio which exceeds $15 billion and the debt portfolio. The state treasurer also provides financial advice to state agencies. Ohio state treasurers serve four-year terms.

Incumbent Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague and Marion Mayor Scott Schertzer are running for the office.

SCOTT SCHERTZER (D)

Scott Schertzer is a graduate of the University of Toledo and received a bachelor's Degree in social studies education. According to his website, he was an educator for 13 years. He worked for the campaigns of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and former U.S. Senator John Glenn, as well as in the office of former Ohio Treasurer Mary Ellen Winthrow. Schertzer was on Marion City Council from 1999 to 2008 and has been the Mayor of Marion since 2008. He was also elected president of the Ohio Municipal League, a nonprofit that represents municipal governments in Ohio in 2018. If elected Schertzer hopes to use technology to help fight state corruption, promote governmental transparency and make public records more accessible.

ROBERT SPRAGUE (R)

Robert Sprague is Ohio’s 49th Treasurer of State. He graduated from Duke University and got his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel HillHe served as city auditor and treasurer of Findlay, Ohio and served the 83rd District as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2011 through 2018. In the private sector, he worked as a project manager for Ernst & Young. Sprauge is campaigning on government transparency, the Family Forward initiative, and ResultsOHIO.
