What does the Ohio Attorney General do?

The Ohio Attorney General is the top law officer in the state and the state’s law advisor. The Attorney General represents the interests of the states, provides legal opinions, provides resources for local law enforcement, handles criminal appeals and more. They are responsible for overseeing over 30 sections. The Attorney General serves a four-year term.

Incumbent Attorney General Dave Yost and State Representative Jeffrey Crossman are running for the seat.

JEFFREY CROSSMAN (D)

Jeffrey Crossman serves as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from the 15th district in Cuyahoga County. Previously, he was a member of the Parma City Council. Crossman grew up in Wickliffe, Ohio and studied at the University of Mount Union and the University of Akron. According to his campaign website, Crossman has introduced bills to fight the culture of corruption in Columbus and voted against gerrymandered maps that deny voters the right to hold politicians accountable while he was working as a State Representative.

DAVE YOST (R)

Dave Yost is the 51st Attorney General of Ohio. Previously, Yost was Ohio’s state auditor from 2011 to 2019. He was also the elected prosecutor for Delaware County for eight years. Yost attended Ohio State University and Capital University Law School. He was a journalist with the Columbus Citizen-Journal and later practiced law with Burkan, Yost & Fuller in Delaware. Yost advocates for governmental transparency, increased accountability, fighting against the opioid epidemic and anti-abortion policies.
