What does a judge on the Athens County Court of Common Pleas do?

Athens County Common Pleas judges are part of the Common Pleas Court, which has jurisdiction to hear all criminal felony cases. Ohio Common Pleas Judges handle trial courts of the Ohio State Court System. Judges on the Common Pleas Court are elected for six-year terms and must be an attorney with six years of law background. The Athens County Common Pleas Court holds criminal and civil court and domestic relations court.

GEORGE MCCARTHY (R)

George McCarthy has served as a judge on the Athens County Court of Common Pleas since 2013. In the past, he was an assistant prosecutor at the Meigs County Prosecutor’s Office, a city attorney in Athens and an attorney at Mollica Gall, Sloan, Sillery & McCarthy Co., LPA. He also served as the president of the Athens County Bar Association and a fellow at the Ohio State Bar Association. McCarthy has focused much of his work on the Ohio Judicial Conference (OJC), co-chairing the OJC Court Technology Committee and serving on the Criminal Law and Procedures Committee. Notably, MacCarthy started the Athens County Veteran Treatment Court.
