Athens County School district received bomb threat that is now considered to be a hoax

On Sunday, an email containing a bomb threat was sent to administrators of Athens City Schools. Other school districts across Ohio also received the threat.

Athens City Schools asked students and staff to avoid visiting school buildings on Sunday but announced that regular class hours would resume on Monday. Students who did not feel comfortable attending school on Monday will receive an excused absence.

The Office of Intelligence from the State Highway Patrol deemed this threat a hoax and said that a similar hoax was sent to some school districts in Texas last Friday.

An email to parents included a copy of the threat sent to administrators, which said that a group claiming to be a Russian terrorist organization sent the message because it does not like the United States support of Ukraine.

If anyone receives additional information, they are asked to contact the Athens Police Department, the Athens County Sheriff's Office, or Safer Schools Ohio at 844-723-3764.
