City says no HallOUween 2021

The City of Athens announced there will be no sanctioned Halloween block party this year in a press release Monday.

According to the release, the block party will not take place in 2021 “due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic and concern with the highly transmissible Delta variant increasing numbers of active cases in Athens County.”

Streets will remain open while no activities, bandstands or vendors will be scheduled.

Athens County is currently at an extremely high risk of spread and increase in hospitalizations with an average of 38 reported cases per day, according to the New York Times. NYT reports that September has been the month with the highest average cases in Athens County.

Although the block party has been cancelled, as previously reported by The New Political, neighborhood trick or treating will be held Oct. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
