What does the Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice do?

The Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice leads the state judicial branch of government. The chief justice presides over the Court's public sessions and private conferences. They have a lot of freedom in choosing what cases the court hears. To hold the position, a candidate must have six years of experience in the practice of law and must have previously been an attorney. The Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice is chairperson of the judicial conference of the United States. As superintendent of all courts of the state, they provide guidance and resources to people at local levels of all 88 separate Ohio counties to do their jobs. The Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice serves a six-year term.

Ohio Supreme Court Justices Jennifer Brunner and Sharon Kennedy are running to be the next Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice.

JENNIFER BRUNNER (D)

Justice Jennifer Brunner currently serves as a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court under the Democratic Party. She was previously elected state appeals court judge of the 10th District Court of Appeals in Franklin County, and as a Franklin County Common Pleas judge. Brunner has 17 years of experience in private law practice. She has also served on the Ohio advisory committee of the I.S. Global Leadership Coalition, and assisted foreign governments by working for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) of the U.S. State Department. Brunner hopes to build collegial working relationships with the other justices and has pledged to be fair, impartial, independent, kind and conscientious as chief justice

SHARON KENNEDY (R)

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy is running for chief justice of the court. She began her career in public service as a Hamilton Police Department Officer, where she worked undercover and implemented crime prevention programs. She also assisted in drafting police policy and procedure for the police department’s accreditation program. Prior, she served as administrative judge of the Butler County Court of Common Pleas and asn a special counsel in the Domestic Relations division. She promises to uphold the Constitution by not legislating from the bench, according to her website.
